ANZAC – The Little Chimp with One Arm, But the Biggest Heart

ANZAC – The Little Chimp with One Arm, But the Biggest Heart
At just two years old, Anzac’s life was violently torn apart. Attacked by poachers, she lost part of her arm and was left to suffer from a parasitic infection that threatened her fragile health. Yet even in the face of such pain, Anzac remained gentle, resilient, and full of an unshakable spirit. Despite all she had endured, her heart was as big as ever.
Anzac’s incredible journey of healing began at Tchimpounga Sanctuary, a haven for orphaned primates. There, compassionate caregivers nurtured her back to health — not just physically, but emotionally. Anzac formed deep bonds with Jeje and Zola, other chimps who had also suffered trauma and were learning to trust life again. Together, they began to heal, finding comfort, friendship, and hope in each other’s presence.
A New Beginning on Ngombe Island
Today, Anzac’s story is one of resilience, strength, and joy. She now lives freely on Ngombe Island, one of Tchimpounga’s three protected islands. Despite having only one arm, Anzac thrives in the forest, climbing trees, swinging through the canopy, and playing with her friends. Her joyful spirit is a testament to her strength, and she has become a symbol of survival and hope.
Anzac’s journey is a beautiful reflection of the legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall — a legacy built on compassion, protection, and the belief that every living being, no matter the hardship, deserves a second chance at life. Anzac’s story is a reminder that no matter the challenges we face, we all have the power to heal, to grow, and to live fully.
Continuing Dr. Goodall’s Legacy
Anzac’s survival and flourishing are not just about her courage — they are part of a broader movement that Dr. Goodall has spent her life advocating for. The work of sanctuaries like Tchimpounga and the tireless efforts of wildlife protection organizations are critical in providing care and hope for animals like Anzac.
