Iran is shrouded in grief and outrage following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in an attack carried out by Israel and the United States.

According to Iran’s WANA news agency, spontaneous marches began in many cities on the morning of March 1st, taking place in large squares, religious sites, and urban centers across the country, attracting large crowds.

In Tehran, thousands gathered in front of Tehran University from early morning, then marched to Enghelab Square. Images showed crowds filling the streets, carrying black flags, Iranian national flags, portraits of the Supreme Leader, and copies of the Quran.

The slogans chanted continuously included “We fight, we sacrifice, no compromise,” “We are followers of the Leader, we cannot ignore his blood,” “No compromise, no surrender – fight against America,” “Revenge, revenge,” along with slogans protesting against the US and Israel.

The phrase “No compromise, no surrender” quickly became the central message of the marches, interpreted by many participants as a political statement rejecting any possibility of negotiation or concession after the attack.

Gatherings were recorded not only in Tehran, but also in most provincial centers and many other cities and towns. In Isfahan, thousands gathered in Imam Khomeini Square. In Qom, crowds assembled at the Fatima Masumeh shrine, where a black flag was raised atop the dome as a symbol of national mourning. In Mashhad, thousands gathered at the Imam Reza shrine, many weeping and fainting from emotion.

In Tabriz, people were moving toward the Mosalla district of Imam Khomeini. Shiraz, Ahvaz, Zahedan, Gorgan, and many other locations witnessed similar marches. In many places, shops were closed, and mourning flags were hung along the streets.

Earlier, the Iranian government declared 40 days of national mourning and seven days of nationwide lockdown. According to Iranian state media, Khamenei died in his office on February 28 while on duty. In a statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed its condolences on the passing of Supreme Leader Khamenei.
