ON THIS DAY IN 2009
President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 🕊️ — recognized for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
At the time, Obama had been in office for less than a year — and the world seemed to pause for that historic moment.
His words echoed across the globe:
“We cannot walk away from our ideals… Peace is not merely the goal — it is the path.”
💭 Sixteen years later — do you still remember how it felt when this news broke?

With his family by his side, Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th president of the United States by Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts Jr. in Washington, D.C., Jan. 20, 2009. More than 5,000 men and women in uniform are providing military ceremonial support to the presidential inauguration, a tradition dating back to George Washington’s 1789 inauguration.
